St. Louis Modernism
It’s pretty difficult to find something to be excited about in St. Louis. It seems many exhibitions, concerts, tours skip right over us and head straight to Chicago, but this month there are two events that make me feel warm and fuzzy. This weekend was the second annual Ivey-Selkirk Modernism auction. I was able to get some things for home and work. It definitely can be a hit or miss auction with the past few being misses, but this last one was finally a hit. I was so excited when a friend of mine got this awesome Hvidt sofa for his basement. It was probably my favorite piece in the auction and at about $1,000 it was way below the $2,000 estimate. So happy for him.
I hold a special place in my heart for Castelli and Columbo, but never really have a place for these pieces. I did get the yellow child’s chair for Samson and the red Kartell cart. I love the 2 piece Componibili circle pieces, but the color was a close miss for me.
I love, love, love this Knoll piece and can’t wait to have it in the house even if it will technically be in the garage waiting for resale. L-O-V-E it.
Also, currently at the Kemper until January is the Birth of the Cool exhibition. It is on my must do this week, so I will update later. For the locals this is old news, but I still haven’t made my way over there.
Weekend Score
Didn’t find too much this weekend, but I did get a fabulous 50’s lamp! Not sure where I am going to put it yet, maybe Samson’s nursery since it has an animal theme. I wish the shade was fiberglass, but the design is just so great. The animals are sculptured wood with painted white eyeballs. So simple!
Eichler Numbers
I ordered these Eichler house numbers and they look amazing! We had to replace the mailbox, light-post, outdoor house light and house numbers. I thought I would show you how great these are! They are about $25 per number. Our house has 5 digits, so it was $90. You can order from Eichler
If anyone knows where to get a nice modern mailbox, please let me know - I have been looking for months!
Mid-Century Modern Horse Ranch Estate
Along with estate sales, garage sales and auction houses, estate auctions are also part of my daily grind. This week my boyfriend and I went to an amazing auction in Kirkwood, Missouri. Situated on 12 acres was a sprawling ranch with attached horse stables. Designed by architect William Bodley Lane in 1955 this was a one owner estate. Filled with slate and brick, a few fireplaces, in-ground pool, radiant heat and an open floor plan, this was an impressive design. Unfortunately, there is so much work that needs to be done. The house has been vacant for years so dirt and mold have set in. Foundation issues occurred and the pool is shot. The radiant heat no longer works and a/c had never been installed. I bought a few items from the auction, but most pieces were janky from humidity, dry rotted or smelled from mold. Since this will inevitably be sold to developers, I thought I would post a few pictures of the remains.
