New Curtians

After countless hours of internet shopping, an hour looking for the right pole, three trips to the store, and two hours of labor, the curtains are hung! I originally wanted white bottom to top shades, but since we are getting new windows next year, I didn’t want to invest in custom made shades just yet. I’m pretty sure I say this about everything, but do you know how expensive window treatments are?! I needed 97″ long x 110″ wide for EACH panel - yikes! I chose Pottery Barn’s silver Dupioni Silk Drapes because they had the best color selection for that size. At the moment I am very into a muted color pallet, but I do have my eye out for a colorful rug to bring the room together. Next project: degreasing the window hardware to make them shiny and bright!

Some small changes around the house

Our new faucet came today! We went with the Kohler “Stillness” widespread sink faucet. I really like the modern neck and the size is perfect for our low vintage vanity. We are still a few weeks from completion because Expo still has to come out to measure for the Onyx sink, but seeing the new faucet makes me smile! The list price is $375, but I bought it on eBay so it was only about $300 with shipping - hey, every little bit helps!

Our master bedroom is pretty small so we had a hard time deciding if we were going to use headboard or just use art to fill the space between the window and the bed. Luby brought home some random vintage pinball machine parts last month. We played with the idea of hanging them in the office, but the space above the bed seemed perfect. In case you don’t see it - these are the side panels of the pinball.

In kitchen news we finally picked a new wall color to replace the orange. We decided on “Volcanic Ash” by Olympic paints. I couldn’t find the color on-line to post, so I just took a picture of the paint sample against our white cabinets. I think it will help “cool” the kitchen and make it look a little more sophisticated. It is pretty dark, but since it is only going on one wall it should look nice and clean against the stainless and white. Cross your fingers for me - I should be painting this weekend!

Here is a picture of our new kitchen fixture! I bought it on Saturday at an estate sale. It will be up later this week, but I was so excited I took a picture of it on the floor…

In living rooms news there are two new tables. We replaced the glass circle table with a long and low surfboard style to have a little more space (it’s also way easier to keep clean). The end table has a nice “pocket” so it works well as a great catch all for Samson’s books and toys.

Saarinen Style

I’ve had my Burke dining set for sometime now and have always used the companion chairs. I’m mostly a white on white, which is why Saarinen and Bertoia dining sets appeal to me so much, but I found some great examples of Saarinen and Saarinen style tables matched with an eclectic mix of chairs. I know the modern- bohemian look has been around for a while, but I found these dining examples to be pretty inspiring. Maybe I will shake things up a little.

I really like this first one with the marble top tulip table. It just looks so warm and cozy. The set-up is a lot like mine too with the sitting area right there. The table can easily have multiple uses when not used for eating.

I wish I had room for an oval one! I could do without the rug, but I love the black chairs with the long white table.

I just thought this as a really clean, simple design. It just looks so relaxed and inviting.

I really like how rich the room feels. I just love the grayish/greenish walls. I would’ve never guessed that is an Ikea table from the photo. The life saver stool is a fun touch too.

My Geneva Kitchen

When we were going through the house to prepare for our estate sale, we found the original brochure for the Geneva cabinets in the kitchen drawer. We have since painted them glossy white, but originally they were brown and yellow - exactly as shown in the first photo. We now have the brochure on the fridge as a fun reminder.

This is how our cabinets looked when we bought the house.

Pink and Turquoise are a great match too!

Mirror Me

I’ve been putting off the bathrooms for just too long. Unfortunately, due to budget restraints, we can not re-tile, so the pink stays. What I am currently working on is the vanity. I would like a new mirror, sink and vanity base. So far we’ve completed replacing the toilet and wall fixtures. Today I went to Expo Design Center in hopes of finding everything in one place, but came back with new rugs instead. Anyway, I think I’m going with a poured counter top/sink combination-possibly in Corian or Silestone. Just a white top, but the vanity base needs to be replaced as well. Apparently this kitchen line can be made into a bathroom vanity. Very neat. Any help would greatly be appreciated. It comes in many color combinations too. In the meantime, here are some before pictures while I decide…

Please look past the mess.

The lights are from Restoration Hardware-currently looking for new mirror.

Look at this neat-o teardrop mirror I found!
