My Dreamsicle Kitchen

I’ve had kitchen on the brain all week and I think the orange has got to go. I am guilty of pushing the color in the first place, but I will admit - it was a mistake. I thought it would look nice against the bright while walls and black floor, but it never really came together. I was thinking of doing all white, turquoise or lime. I will eventually put something on the wall. Maybe some shelves or a small cabinet. *The brass plate on the wall is the “central station” for the house intercom. It plays music and controls all the rooms (including the bathroom) speakers.* I will post some inspiration photos later, but in the meantime, any suggestions would be oh, so helpful!

  1. We have plenty of painting redo’s to share — just haven’t got around to blogging them yet.

Orange is so tricky. We’re thinking about a “burnt” orange in our lower family room, but I know we have to be so careful when picking the shade. Our inspiration comes from the 10th picture in this slideshow. The caption beside the pic describes the color as “rusty red” (???).

I like how the color looks with the creamy whites of the ceiling and front wall, and the grays of the couch and fireplace. The light situation in the room also has a lot to do w/ how the colors all mesh and work together.

  3. When we re did our kitchen we ran into the same issue as you. We wanted a bright color but were afraid to do the whole kitchen, so we ended up doing just one accent wall in Lime Green, and it ended up being perfect. We actually love it so much we are going to add it to another wall I think.

The color was Sassy Green from Sherwin Williams

  5. hmmm… I don’t think the orange looks bad at all. It’s definitely a color that goes with the style of your house. You could try painting the trim and maybe even the doors the same color. I think the trim fights with the orange… my eyes end up roving around the photo wherever I see the white.

  7. Yeah, I feel the same way, my eyes go straight for the white every time! Too much of a contrast maybe.

  9. Brian: Thanks! I’ve thought about lime green too. I love that color in kitchens, especially with a bright white against it.

  11. The stark white trim contrasts the orange. Maybe you could use a much more toned down base and an accent wall in orange or you could do a retro pattern wall that would give you the color you want but not make you go blind. The style of your home would allow an exploration of some pop art style patterns. Speaking of, there is a mid century art/furniture exhibit at the Kemper Art Museum at Wash U. I haven’t been able to see it yet but it could bring you some inspiration.
