Living Room Windows
I am in desperate need of some suggestions for our living room windows! Curtains? Blinds? Shades? Our neighbors are so tired of looking at us! They actually call our house “The Airport” because of all the lights we normally have on…

hi there! love your house! found your blog via mid-century modernist. before i moved to kuwait i lived in a 50’s ranch rental that had the big picture window in the living room like yours. the owner had custom white wood blinds but they didn’t go well with my furniture (our house is everything 50’s/early 60’s). i think simple (maybe 3 shades) that roll up to where they can’t be seen would be nice. maybe some vintage curtains or some in that blue of your couch pillows.
We a similar window and the previous owners put in cellular blinds that rise from the bottom, so you can pretty much always keep them open enough to bring in lots of light without having your living room be the neighborhoods tv set.
Not historically accurate, but nice all the same.
Hi there!
Lovely house!
Why don’t you add some green to this fabulous room? Different kinds and sizes of plants in the window would look great and cozy and would give you some more privacy from the neighbours but still keep it nice and open.
Hi there! We have a 1952 MCM in Portland, Oregon and decided on roller shades from smith+noble to be the best deal and provide the inconspicuous modern look we were going for. I highly recommend getting the “reverse roll” (a free upgrade) as it has a cleaner look, as well as paying extra for the loop control system as opposed to the standard spring lock (which is impossible to operate if you’ve never had roller shades and don’t have the “wrist” technique down!).
Hope this helps!

We have these awesome blinds that will go up to cover the top of the window and/or go down to the bottom of the window depending on which cord you use. The previous owners put them in, so I don’t know where you can get them, but I think they would look great on your windows. You could have privacy, but still get light and show off those awesome transom windows.
My wife and I are looking at solar shades for our home, which is a mix of MCM and modern. They let in light, but yet obscure the view. At this point, we’re just going to use the roller shades without curtains, mainly b/c we like the clean look.
Here are the best sources we’ve found:

Anne, i don’t know how to reach you, but I wanted to share this company (although i don’t know how the hell they survived the past three decades though). You can repost this somewhere where it can be useful for others. I haven’t called for shipping or product prices, but will soon.

Hello, I just found your blog today through Mid Century Modernist. I was wondering what area in STL you lived in, because I may have to move there in a couple years and I want to know where to look to find a house like yours!
Feel free to email me so you don’t have to post your answer publicly. Anyway, you have an amazing home.
Thank you so much! I love the idea of bottom lifting shades and I think it is what we are going to go with. I really appreciate the Shade Store referral as well as Smith and Noble which I always loved. I agree about green in the room as well, but I am not as domestic as I guess I seem. Maybe some cacti?? Thanks for all the help!
